Prof.(Dr.) Nachiketa Mittal

Dr. Nachiketa Mittal is the Former Professor of Law and Director of the Faculty of Law at Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal, India. Dr. Mittal was also formerly a Dean In-charge of the Unitedworld School of Law, Karnavati University and a former faculty of law in the National Law University Odisha (NLUO). Besides, Dr. Mittal has worked with the three Hon’ble Chief Justices of India in the Supreme Court of India on invitation as Assistant Registrar (Research).

With the release of latest language model of artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT in November 2022, Dr. Mittal conceptualized and launched an empirical research project to examine the growing implications of ChatGPT and similar AIs in legal research and over all teaching and learning aspects in the Indian Law Schools. This project is supported by five National Law Universities- NLIU (Bhopal), NLU (Tripura), DNLU (Jabalpur), MNLU (Mumbai) and NUSRL (Ranchi). The project has been joined by faculty and law students as researchers from more than 20 law schools in India representing a diversity of Central Universities, State Universities, National Law Universities and Private Universities. The project is under progress and will submit its report soon to the regulatory bodies of legal education.

Dr. Mittal graduated in B.S.L.LL.B. from the University of Pune and completed LL.M. (Human Rights) from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. He completed his Ph.D. (in Law) from NLU Odisha in the field of access to justice for the rural poor studying the sustainability of Gram Nyayalaya model.

During the national lockdown in April 2020, Dr. Mittal established an online law teaching platform called Virtual Law School (VLS) of KETAS Education Foundation (www.virtuallawschool.in and www.ketasvlac.co.in). It is registered as Section 8 not-for-profit company under the Indian Companies Act, 2013. It is a unique experiment where the law teachers and lawyers donate their law teaching hours and teach completely on a pro bono basis. Retired Judges of Supreme Court, Senior Law Professors and Senior Advocates and law firm professionals teach on this platform. It aims at enabling access to quality law teaching for thousands of law students who cannot get admission in top law schools of the country due to financial, geographical and other barriers. Further, in 2020, Dr. Mittal also founded Judicial Preparation and Advisory Center (JPAC) which is also a law teachers’ driven initiative. Dr. Mittal also has been passionate to work for the development and betterment of the teaching community. Pursuant to this commitment, in 2020, he partnered with like-minded university level teachers of various disciplines and formed a not for profit body called ‘College Teachers Council of India (CTCI)’. This body aims to contribute in the sphere of faculty development by mentoring young teachers in higher education; offer trainings to aspirants of joining university level teaching; address issues of service and employment in the universities and colleges; and partner with the regulatory bodies to contribute in the higher education policy making process.

More recently in 2021, Dr. Mittal established a CareerRun Consulting Firm (www.careerrun.co.in) that guides and mentors students and young professionals in pursuits of their career. This firm specialises in study abroad consultancy and facilitates drafting, editing and review of Personal Statement, Scholarship Essay, Resume and filing of applications for LLM, Public Policy, Management and other popular programs in USA, Canada, UK, Singapore, Australia and Europe.

Dr. Mittal is a also recipient of a Scholarship from the Charitable Trust Committee of International Bar Association, London. Prior to joining legal academics, Dr. Mittal has worked with civil society organisations across India. He has led various access to justice projects jointly funded by the Ministry of Law & Justice, Govt. of India and UNDP, during his stint with Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra, Dehradun. Dr. Mittal has worked in more than 150 villages of India as part of several research and empowerment programs for women, children and disadvantaged groups and indigenous population. Dr. Mittal’s areas of research include alternative disputes resolution (ADR); international commercial arbitration; online education; teaching pedagogy; legal-tech and artificial intelligence; access to justice; criminal procedure;, human rights and legal education.

Dr. Mittal has been a visiting faculty at Indian Law Institute, Delhi and has also delivered lectures at National Academy for Training & Research in Social Security, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India; NUSRL Ranchi and in several other law colleges in the country. Dr. Mittal also has a diverse exposure of research and lectures engagement internationally. He has been regularly presenting research papers, delivering guest lectures and talks in the international conferences as invited panel speaker in the leading law schools in the United States since 2014. Some of these institutions include- Miami Dade College Florida; Georgia State University, College of Law; Barry University, Orlando; Loyola University of Chicago School of Law; Atlanta International Arbitration Society, Georgia; North-western University Pritzker School of Law, Chicago; Toledo University College of Law, Ohio and Southern Illinoi University School of Law.

Dr. Mittal has also published in international and national law journals on wide range of legal issues including two-tier arbitration process, third party funded arbitration, euthanasia, access to justice, gender disparity in Indian judiciary, decline of NHRC in a populist regime, legal education and others. Besides, he regularly writes in popular media like Bar and Bench, Deccan Herald, New Indian Express, the Statesman to name a few.

He is a dog lover, enjoys learning about new cultures and is passionate about use of technology in every sphere of human life and learning.
