Dr. Alam passed all the examinations with flying colors with First Division securing First Position in order of merit in his School Examinations till 10+2. He secured Second Position in order of merit in the LL. B. and LL. M. Examinations. He was awarded Fulbright Fellowship in 2005 to read for his Ph. D. at The George Washington University Law School, Washington DC, USA and earned his Degree of Doctor Philosophy in Law from the National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU).

Dr. Alam is the senior most Professor of Law at NLIU and is also Senior Professor by designation. He is the first person to join NLIU as a member of faculty on the post of Assistant Professor of Law on 1 August 1998. When he joined, NLIU existed in a gazette notification of Government of Madhya Pradesh. First Academic Session of NLIU was planned to commence on 1 September 1998 and it commenced as planned. All the preparations were to be made in less than a month. Dr. Alam got the opportunity to actively participate in all the preparations, both academic and administrative including the search of a building for the University. Dr. Alam introduced, taught, designed and developed several courses including Common Law Method, Law of Contract, Intellectual Property Rights, International Trade Law, Sociology of Law, Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Banking Law, Legal Writing, Science-Technology and Law, Biotechnology and Law, Civil Procedure Code, Seminar on: Law and Information Technology, Law and Nuclear Technology, Law relating to Carriage of Goods, Artificial Intelligence and Patent Law, Disruptive Technologies and Patent Law, and Advanced Patent Law. He specializes in the use of Case Method, Logic and Reasoning, and the methods of learning how to learn and apply law. His area of interest is Case Method, Intellectual Property Law and Business Laws.

In June 2007, he was appointed as Associate Professor of Law. In February 2009, he was appointed as the first MHRD Chair Professor on IPR at NLIU. In February 2019, he is promoted as Senior Professor. The academic year 2024– 25 is the twenty-seventh year of his teaching, sixteenth year as Professor of Law and sixth year as Senior Professor.   In May 2023, he was appointed as DPIIT IPR Chair Professor (Additional Charge). Under his guidance five candidates have successfully completed their doctoral research for the award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Law. One candidate has submitted his Ph. D. Thesis. Eight candidates are pursuing their doctoral research under him. More than forty students have successfully completed their LL. M. Dissertations under his guidance. Ten students of B. A. LL. B. (Hons.) have completed their Dissertations under his guidance.

In 2023, Dr. Alam visited Rajshahi University along with two students. In 2022, he attended the Global Law Deans Forum at Pembroke College, Oxford University, UK. In 2019, he was awarded a fellowship by WIPO-WTO to attend “Sixteenth WIPO-WTO Colloquium for Teachers of Intellectual Property” at WIPO, Geneva in June 2019 and “Second IP Researchers Europe Conference” at WIPO and WTO in Geneva. In 2018, he attended the Annual Meeting of International Association of Law Schools at Doha, Qatar. In 2013, he was nominated by the Government of India to attend a Workshop organized by WIPO in Seoul, South Korea. He participated in an advanced course on Legal Education and Research in 2007 on a scholarship awarded by Cardiff Law School and British Council. He attended an advanced course on Intellectual Property Law in 2001 on a fellowship awarded by CASRIP, University of Washington, USA. He was a recipient of AMU Merit Scholarship from 1989 to 1997 for being a meritorious student.

Dr. Alam has many publications, including SCOPUS indexed publications, to his credit in the form of articles, books and handbooks His research paper “Monsanto’s Bt. Cotton Patent, Indian Courts and Public Policy” has been published by WIPO-WTO, Geneva in 2019-20.  On invitation of WIPO-WTO he attended “17th WIPO-WTO Colloquium for Teachers of Intellectual Property” organized in virtual format by WIPO WTO in November 2021.  His co-authored research paper “COVID – 19 Pandemic: Congenital Fluidity of Proposal for Waiver of IP Rights and the Road Ahead” has been recently by WIPO-WTO in the Special Edition of Colloquium Papers in October 2022.  He has also authored and co-authored the project reports for the agencies of Government of India: DST, ICAR, Ministry of Environment and Forests, MP State Biodiversity Board, Madhya Pradesh Jal Nigam Maryadit and Department of School Education, Government of Madhya Pradesh. He has delivered more than three hundred invited expert lectures on various topical issues of law in academic programs organized by the institutions of national repute including: National Judicial Academy, Bhopal; Indian Institute of Technology, Roorki; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal; NALSAR University of Law, Hydrabad; HNLU, Raipur; DNLU, Jabalpur; MANIT, Bhopal; RGPV, Bhopal; IIITM, Gwalior; IIFM, Bhopal; Academy of Administration, Bhopal; Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi; MP Judicial Academy, Jabalpur; EPCO, Bhopal; ICAI, New Delhi; CII, and FICCI. He delivered Keynote Address in many seminars and conferences and has chaired sessions in various seminars and conferences. He has organized forty workshops/seminars/conferences. He participated in more than thirty national and international workshops as a delegate.

He is the Editor of NLIU Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Editor-in-Chief of NLIU Journal of Business Laws. He is the Faculty Advisor to NLIU Law Review. He is a Member of Advisory Board and Editorial Board of several law journals and law reviews including Journal of Intellectual Property Rights, NISCAIR, New Delhi; and CCI Journal of Competition Law and Policy – a journal of Competition Commission of India.

Dr. Alam is a Member of the Academic Council of NLIU and was also a Member of the Executive Council of NLIU. He is also the Chairperson/Member of many Committees of NLIU and of other institutions. He has also officiated as the Director (Vice-Chancellor) of NLIU many times. He discharged the duties of Registrar (Additional Charge), and Finance Officer (Additional Charge) at NLIU.

He was a member of the Copyright Enforcement Advisory Council of the Government of India and Subcommittee of the Copyright Enforcement Advisory Council of the Government of India. He also held the membership of American Society of International Law.
