Dr. Debashri Sarkar, is a graduate of National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal. After completing her graduation, she pursued her interest in human rights and gender studies while working as a Research and Advocacy Officer at the Lawyers Collective, New Delhi. She was the Primary investigator on the Project funded by the Mac Arthur Foundation on Sex Selective Abortions in India: A Critical Study of the PCPNDT Act. She further went on to pursue her LL.M from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi and was the batch topper. Thereafter, she joined academia and was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Gujarat National Law University Gandhinagar in 2008, where she worked for almost three years. She bagged the UGC Junior Research Fellowship and Senior Research Fellowship and completed her Ph.D. from the University of Delhi. Her Doctoral research was on Assisted Reproductive Techniques with specific reference to Commercial Surrogacy: The Emerging Socio-Legal Jurisprudence.
Dr. Debashri has been teaching in NLIU since 2014 and has a teaching experience of 11 years. She has taught papers like Personal Laws, Statutory Interpretation, International Law, International Humanitarian Law, Gender and Law, Sports Law, Research and Publication Ethics at the undergraduate and post graduate students as well as Doctoral candidates. She has published in several journals of repute and is a regular visitor and guest lecturer to various training programs at RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Central Academy of Police Training, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
She has been a Resource Person to several Women and Child related NGOs. Some of her recent publications include Rights of Sex Workers in India with specific reference to the COVID 19 pandemic, Special Marriages Act, 1954 and its utility for same sex and queer marriages in India, A Critical Appraisal of the Maternity Benefit Act, 2017. Her research interests include Personal Laws, Gender Studies, and Statutory Interpretation.
In NLIU, Dr. Debashri is a part of several committees. She is the Faculty Advisor for the Alumni Affairs Cell, Faculty Coordinator of student discussion forum ‘MANTHAN’ and is also a member of the Internal Committee for prevention of Sexual Harassment, among others.
